Improved response and upgrading the emissions to LEV-2 while boosting the effortless power that is a hallmark of the brand; These were the key objectives for a major powertrain upgrade supported from concept to production by Integral Powertrain.
A range of IP’s simulation techniques were used to develop a range of improvements including valvetrain, after-treatment and turbocharger systems to enable the 2007 MY Arnage to meet CARB LEV-2 as well as Euro Stage 4 emissions standards, while producing 500bhp and 1000Nm of torque.
Control system simulation and model-based calibration tools were used to optimise vehicle driveability and emissions performance as well as to ensure compliance with stringent engine misfire monitor legislation.
A key challenge was the control of catalyst light-off after engine start. Despite the presence of turbine housings in front of the catalysts, the team’s strategy ensured that the catalysts became operational only 17 seconds after starting the engine and achieved 95 per cent conversion efficiency in just 30 seconds.
The V8 is now set to continue its long history of powering Bentley’s most prestigious products for many years to come and Integral Powertrain is proud to have been part of the team that achieved this important milestone.
