As our customers (both on and off-road) develop products to meet European and North American diesel emissions legislation, the development of the boosting system is a particular challenge. A common theme is the increased use of EGR at mid and high-load and the corresponding decrease in exhaust temperatures. This in turn is putting pressure on performance, economy and dynamic response objectives.
A range of different technical approaches are being pursued and IP is deeply involved in the analysis and development-based evaluation of alternatives. Our recent work in this area has included assessment of a number of variable geometry turbocharger concepts, development of compressor map enhancement devices, various sequential turbocharging configurations and advanced EGR systems using both low and high pressure circuits.
Simulation activity is also high in this area with investigations into combined turbo-supercharging systems and development of boost and EGR control algorithms.
