cycle resolved friction

A detailed knowledge of cycle resolved friction is important to those developing tribological interfaces and is also significant in understanding the requirements for starting systems. IP is currently working with a client to develop and validate a cycle resolved friction model to achieve this. The model is built onto our Simulink dynamic powertrain simulation.

In order to validate the model IP is using an advanced torque sensing system similar to that first used on our “Mobile Test bed”. By modelling the sensor, the cranktrain dynamics and the cylinder pressure forcing, features of the cycle resolved friction are deduced and compared with the model predictions.

The new models will be a valuable tool for understanding and quantifying detailed friction effects on CO2 emissions
and will form part of the application process for ISG systems.
