IP has recently filed a patent application for a coupling suitable for use with certain types of belt driven ISG systems. Various topologies of electric machine are under consideration for these systems - sometimes described as micro-hybrid or stop-start devices. Generally manufacturers seek to minimise the size and cost of both the machine and its associated power electronics but this can be dependent on the required torque and maximum rotational speed.
By combining a simple epicyclic gear-set with two one-way clutches the effective gearing between the pulley and the electrical machine can be modified substantially depending on the direction of torque transmission. In the illustrated version, which is entirely passive, when the machine drives the pulley there is a 4:1 reduction whereas when the pulley drives the machine the ratio is 1:1.
The device also performs the role of an overrunning de-coupler.
