Streamlined Analysis of Re-generative Braking Systems

As with many hybrid functions, the cost and benefit of re-generative braking systems are highly dependent on a wide range of variables. IP has developed a streamlined simulation approach to enable these systems to be analysed rapidly and with confidence. The main focus is on all-electric topologies but, following recent interest in flywheel / variator types, modules for these technology types are also included.

The first stage, which can typically be completed in less than 1 month, investigates cost and benefits based on high level specifications. This is done using our kinematic simulation with linked, specification-based cost models and can be readily applied to a wide range of vehicles and system types from intelligent alternators through to full transmission-integrated hybrids. The simulation model can be rapidly configured using either customer or IP benchmark data for vehicle, powertrain, energy storage system, electrical machine, electrical demand and high level control strategy and is ideal for conducting parametric studies to ensure the most appropriate solution is selected.

Once a preferred architecture has been selected, dynamic simulations are conducted using IP’s correlated Simulink vehicle-powertrain model. This includes more detailed representation of mechanical, electrical and control elements (including braking system controls integration). This approach delivers high-confidence virtual prototyping to complement detailed sub-system design and specification activities.
