Engine downsizing methods and technologies

The use of smaller engines operating at higher output and lower speed has been a major development direction for Original Equipment Manufacturers' (OEMs) to reach aggressive CO2 targets. This approach can be extended further by improving boosting and gas exchange so that performance and responsiveness are maintained. This is a key area of technical strength and innovation for IP.

Our capability is based on well proven engine simulation of the functional and control aspects of multi-stage boosting and turbo compounding systems as they interact with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), and load control. We have also developed a unique inside the transient test based optimisation process.

Our innovations in this field include early work on cooled EGR for use in gasoline engines at full load, a highly effective charge cooling system based on the vehicle air-conditioning and the SuperGen system which combines fast response with mild hybrid functions.
