IP & Tickford Announce New JV for Vehicle Emissions Testing

Date: 07/03/2009

A new vehicle emissions test company has been established by powertrain engineering consultancy Integral Powertrain and test specialist Tickford Powertrain Test. The joint venture, IP Tickford Ltd, will provide highly efficient whole-vehicle gasoline and diesel testing to next-generation emissions standards, supported by a high level of expertise in powertrain design, test and development.

“Having worked closely together over the past ten years to deliver various powertrain development programmes, we have an outstanding relationship that provides a dependable, flexible and cost-effective service for our respective clients,” says Integral Powertrain director John McLean. “The new JV allows us to strengthen our service by providing the security and flexibility that comes from having our own, tightly integrated, facility with a one hundred percent proven delivery route.”

The new company, IP Tickford Ltd, will acquire the full modal vehicle emissions test facility recently used by Integral Powertrain to deliver a multi-variant direct injection, EU5 / ULEV2 gasoline EMS application, now entering production with a European manufacturer of prestige passenger cars. The facility, which is regularly correlated against OEM and industry benchmark facilities, already benefits from new particulate measurement equipment, alongside facilities for cost-effective -7oC emissions development and -40oC vehicle soak.

In the first phase of a comprehensive investment programme, starting in the second quarter of 2009, the vehicle emissions facility will be upgraded for forthcoming diesel legislation with dedicated diesel gas analysers and sampling systems. A secure engine dynamometer section within Tickford’s facility, recently used by Integral Powertrain for EU5 diesel engine mapping, has also been made available exclusively to IP’s customers, enabling seamless integration of engine test activities.

Tony Braddon, managing director of Tickford Powertrain Test Ltd, commented “Integral Powertrain’s expertise provides an excellent complement to our own services, offering our clients an independent gasoline and diesel development capability that will help them address increasingly challenging emissions requirements. Joining forces will allow each company to deliver complementary services and increase the overall investment in the facility.”

Integral Powertrain and Tickford are both located in Milton Keynes, close to the M1 at the heart of the UK automotive engineering sector. IP Tickford’s facility is based at the Tickford site. Technical staff will be drawn from both companies, providing an exceptional understanding of the development process and the techniques required to quickly and cost-effectively deliver the knowledge needed by customer engineering teams. The facility is accredited with VCA for witnessed and CoP testing of gasoline, LPG and CNG fuelled vehicles.

Clients will continue to deal with their existing Integral Powertrain or Tickford contacts, with Integral Powertrain taking the lead for projects with powertrain engineering content.
